The Zomi are an ethnic group that inhabited Chin State in the Northwestern of
Myanmar and Northeastern Indian states of Manipur and Mizoram, Zomi of Myanmar
and the Mizo people of Mizoram and Zomi in Manipur are kindred tribes.
The people of Chin State are made up of many different ethnic groups, different languages and have different cultural and historical identities. Chin is given by the Burmese; over time “Chin” came into British usage. Some Zomi reject Chin as being of colonial origin, and use the self-designation "Zo", which is a generic term that has variants in most Zomi dialects. "Zomi" (meaning "Zo people").
Some fifty-three tribes of Chin peoples in Myanmar are recognized. The main ethnic groups are Asho, Dai, Kcho, Khumi, Laimi, Mara, Matu, Zophei, Mizo and Zomi.
